We should hold ourselves to the highest standards when it comes to healthy and constructive teaching methods.
What does this mean, exactly? Well, for starters, it is vital that we always encourage our students and never restrain them from their pursuit of learning. Learning happens in many different ways and each student has their own unique learning style.
A “one size fits all” approach to teaching is not adequate, and in many cases, can actually do more harm than good. Often teachers feel obligated to mold their students into a predetermined (and antiquated) model of achievement, undermining the unique and special qualities often exhibited by “non-traditional” learners, which arguably, are most of the students in our classrooms.

Creating and maintaining a healthy, inclusive learning environment is not an easy task! It requires us to have an extreme amount of patience and tolerance for the unexpected. We have to be willing to shift gears quickly and often in order to accommodate classroom dynamics, which can change on a daily basis. However, this does not mean teachers forgo setting boundaries and making their expectations of students clear. Obviously, students must respect classroom rules, codes of conduct, and behavior guidelines. But we must always be willing to investigate whether or not a student’s lack of respect or inappropriate classroom behavior is a symptom of a bigger problem. If many students in a classroom are
exhibiting said behaviors, the teacher must ask herself, “Is the method I am using to delinver my materials actually effective for the abilities of the students in this particular class?” We may have to make adjustments to our teaching style. This is a fluid, ongoing process of self-evaluation.
Students can shine when their efforts are recognized and praised. Our role is to help guide them as they navigate a complicated and challenging school environment. Our understanding of and respect for these complications and challenges can make all the difference in how students perceive their value and contribution to the classroom, and eventually, the greater community.

– – –
